Pneumatic cylinders move, clamp and push in almost every production. Many standard cylinders follow a standard, which makes replacement easier than it may seem.

What the standard specifies

ISO 15552 specifies the mounting dimensions of double-acting cylinders with bores from 32 to 320 millimetres: mounting pattern, piston rod thread and port thread. Cylinders from different makers with the same bore and stroke are therefore mostly interchangeable.

For the replacement, bore, stroke, cushioning, magnetic piston for sensors and mounting type matter. The service unit upstream of the valve filters the compressed air, regulates the pressure and removes condensate; its filter element is a typical wear part.

What a request for pneumatic cylinders should contain

  • type designation or bore and stroke
  • cushioning and magnetic piston yes or no
  • mounting type and accessories such as a clevis
  • for service units: port size and pressure range
  • quantity and requested delivery date
