Belts and chains transmit power to conveyors, pumps and fans. They wear in a predictable way and can be reordered unambiguously from their marking.

How the designations are structured

Narrow V-belts carry a profile such as SPZ, SPA, SPB or SPC and a length, usually the datum length in millimetres. Several belts on one pulley should come from one matched set. Toothed belts are designated by tooth profile and pitch, for example T10 or 8M, length and width.

Roller chains to ISO 606 carry a short designation such as 08B-1: 08 stands for a pitch of half an inch, B for the series, 1 for a simplex chain. Length or number of links and connecting links are added. Sprockets and pulleys wear too and should be checked as well.

What a request for belts and chains should contain

  • designation of the belt or chain
  • profile, pitch, length and width
  • for chains: number of links and connecting link
  • material, for example stainless or food-grade
  • quantity, for V-belts as a matched set
