Wire ropes on cranes are wear parts with a safety function. They are inspected regularly and replaced as soon as they reach the discard criteria.

When a rope is replaced

ISO 4309 describes the discard criteria: visible wire breaks over a reference length, decrease in diameter, corrosion and deformations such as birdcaging or kinks. The operator sets inspection intervals according to use and requirements.

A replacement rope must match the crane in diameter, construction, core, lay type and rope grade. For high lifting heights, rotation-resistant ropes are used. Sheaves and drum should be checked as well: if the groove is worn, the new rope also wears quickly.

What a request for a crane rope should contain

  • rope diameter and length
  • construction, core and lay type
  • rope grade and surface, for example galvanised
  • end terminations such as wedge socket or ferrule
  • details from the crane log book or rope certificate
